Nghi Vo's The Scarlet Ball follows Judith Ban, a convent girl, courtesan, and failed thief looking for a new life in Gilded Age New York. The city's ruling families protect their position through lavish balls, strict rituals, and marriages to demons. Judith gets her invitation when the Howard matriarch offers her the place of a missing debutante named Iphigenia Marshall.

Taking Iphigenia's place is not a matter of borrowing a dress. Her face is stitched over Judith's, giving the outsider access to a social world that can spot weakness as quickly as it rewards beauty.
