Visual Intelligence Moves to Your Ears

Apple's rumored camera-equipped AirPods are meant to give Siri a view of the world without making you raise an iPhone. A leaked demonstration showed a wearer holding up a book and asking the earbuds to save it for later, while setup text in macOS connects the hardware directly to Visual Intelligence. The same idea could support questions about nearby objects, walking directions, and reminders tied to what the wearer sees.

Two Tiny Cameras, One Shared Scene

Code found in macOS describes a camera in each earbud capturing synchronized RGB still images with matching frame IDs. Active capture samples at 640 by 640 pixels and can return a processed image up to 1024 by 1024, while a lower-resolution passive mode appears designed for background awareness. The system accounts for head movement, rejects obstructed or overly blurry frames, and can detect whether a person is in view on the earbuds themselves.

Still Images Without a Video Mode

The discovered framework supports recurring still frames for Visual Intelligence, but it contains no video-recording option. It also points to a hardware indicator light on each AirPod, giving people nearby a visible cue when images are being captured. That distinction matters for a device worn in places where a conventional camera would be conspicuous.

A 2027 Debut Remains the Target

The camera model shown in Apple's leaked demo appears to be an abandoned AirPods Pro 3 variant, so its exact specifications are not guaranteed to carry over. Apple is reportedly developing a newer version for 2027, potentially alongside the 20th-anniversary iPhone in September. The familiar AirPods Pro shape is expected to remain, with the cameras fitted into the stems.
