Meta Moves the Computer Off Your Face

Project Phoenix appears to rethink Meta's headset by separating the display from much of its computing hardware. Leaked firmware images show a slim, glasses-like visor connected to an external puck, a layout that could remove battery and processor weight from the wearer's head. The headset itself looks closer to thick eyewear than the enclosed body of a Quest.

Open Sides Change the Feel of Mixed Reality

The leaked frame leaves more of the wearer's peripheral vision open, favoring awareness and comfort over the sealed immersion of a conventional VR headset. Earlier project details point to micro-OLED displays and a total headset weight near the 100-gram range, though Meta has not published final specifications. Prescription-lens setup material found inside Horizon OS firmware supplied the clearest images yet.

Phoenix Is Its Own Branch of Meta's Hardware

This is not simply a slimmer Quest 4. The puck-based design suggests a different kind of device built around media, productivity, and mixed reality in a lighter form, while Meta continues to consider a traditional Quest successor separately. Project Phoenix is not expected to launch until 2027, and the company could still change the final hardware. Its central idea is already easy to grasp: long sessions become more plausible when the heaviest parts are somewhere other than your face.
