The Small iPad May Get Its Biggest Screen Upgrade

The iPad mini 8 could bring OLED to Apple’s most portable tablet, replacing the current model’s 8.3-inch LCD with a panel rumored to measure 8.7 inches. OLED would give the mini deeper blacks, stronger contrast, faster response times, and better viewing angles—the kind of upgrade that would be visible every time the screen turns on.

Whether Apple will also move beyond 60Hz remains unknown. The tablet may use a single-stack LTPS panel rather than the brighter two-stack LTPO construction found in the iPad Pro, keeping a meaningful distinction between Apple’s compact and premium lines.

An A19 Pro in a One-Hand Tablet

Code associated with models J510 and J511 points to an A19 Pro chip, most likely the five-core-GPU version used in the iPhone Air. That would bring a newer GPU architecture, per-core Neural Accelerators, and a 16-core Neural Engine, although another internal-code clue leaves an outside possibility of Apple choosing the A20 Pro instead.

A Case Designed to Keep Water Out

Apple is also said to be exploring a more water-resistant enclosure with a vibration-based speaker system. By making parts of the tablet’s surface produce sound, the design could eliminate conventional speaker holes and reduce entry points for water and dust.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman expects the new mini by October. Pricing is the uncomfortable unknown: the current 128GB Wi-Fi model already starts at $599, and an OLED display could push the next version higher still.
