Xbox's First Black Box Returns in Bricks

Mattel Brick Shop is marking 25 years of Xbox with a full-size building model of the original console. The 3,509-piece set recreates both the machine and its enormous Duke controller at 1:1 scale, making the finished build immediately recognizable to anyone who remembers Microsoft's 2001 hardware.

Three Launch-Era Worlds Sit Under the Shell

Inside the console are removable modules devoted to Halo: Combat Evolved, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and Psychonauts. Twelve NanoWorld figures populate those miniature scenes, and each module can leave the main build for its own separate display.

The Duke Unlocks Lights and Sound

The brick-built controller is also the interface for the model's electronic surprises. Pressing its buttons activates illuminated scenes and matching game music, while a concealed input sequence produces an additional lighting effect for builders who work out the code.

The 17-plus set carries a suggested price of $329.99 and is available for presale through retailers including Amazon, Best Buy and Mattel Creations. Its strongest trick is the contrast between the faithful exterior and the tiny game worlds inside, giving collectors a reason to open the console after the long build is finished.
