RGG Studio's Crime Epic Goes Live Action

Stranger Than Heaven is becoming a live-action Netflix film, bringing one of RGG Studio's most ambitious game worlds to another medium. The source game follows Makoto Daito, a young Japanese-American who leaves San Francisco for Japan and becomes entangled with the underworld after meeting Orpheus. Sega producer Toru Nakahara describes the movie's intended tone as a "badass action drama."

Five Eras Give the Story Its Scale

The game moves through five periods of Japanese history, beginning in 1915 and continuing through 1929, 1943, 1951, and 1965. Its locations change with the decades, from Kokura and Kure to Osaka, Atami, and Kamurocho. The film's exact plot has not been outlined, but that long arc gives the adaptation a rich foundation of shifting cities, loyalties, and criminal power.

A Sega Veteran Stays Involved

Nakahara is producing for Sega, keeping the company connected directly to the live-action project. Stranger Than Heaven joins Netflix's broader slate of game adaptations while standing apart from the lighter Sega projects announced with it. Crazy Taxi is being shaped as a comedy, and the new Sonic show is aimed at young children; this film gets the dramatic end of the partnership.

Netflix has not announced a director, screenwriter, cast, or release date. For now, the strongest hook is the contrast between a personal underworld journey and a story that stretches across half a century.
