Five Xbox Generations Could Meet in One Box

Project Helix is Microsoft’s next Xbox concept, reportedly able to run PC games and titles from the original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series eras. If the plan succeeds, its library breadth—not one exclusive launch game—could become the console’s defining feature.

Disc Ownership May Become a Digital License

Microsoft is developing a way to convert eligible Xbox One and Series discs into digital rights that follow players to Xbox devices. Helix may not include a drive, so the process would preserve access by changing the format rather than reading old media directly.

Publishers Hold the Keys

Both legacy-game sales and disc conversion require publishers to opt in. For original Xbox and 360 titles, each rights holder can approve individual games, choose pricing, and decide whether Game Pass inclusion is allowed.

Compatibility Is Ambitious but Not Permanent by Nature

Expired music or vehicle licenses can remove even Microsoft-owned games from sale, and publishers may decline or later withdraw participation. Helix could still become an extraordinary preservation machine, but its final library will be shaped as much by contracts and cooperation as engineering.
