Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods are being designed for visual understanding, not snapshots. Their cameras would feed information about the wearer’s surroundings to Siri, turning Visual Intelligence into something that can work without first pointing an iPhone at a book, sign, or object.

Pro May Win Out Over Ultra

A file in macOS Tahoe 26.7 labels the new model “AirPods Pro,” undercutting earlier speculation that Apple might call its pricier earbuds AirPods Ultra. The name could still change, but the software also contains a full demonstration video, making a simple placeholder less convincing.

“The camera in the AirPods will not be used for capturing photos and videos and will instead feed visual information to Siri AI for an easier-to-use version of Visual Intelligence.”

Two Projects, One Nearer the Finish Line

The path to launch has been unusually tangled. One camera-AirPods project, codenamed B798, was said to have slipped to 2027 because of Siri AI delays, while a separate B790 version has continued alongside it and appears closer to release.

The discovery in shipping software suggests Apple may show the earbuds this year. If it does, the real story will be whether hands-free visual help feels genuinely useful—and how clearly Apple explains what ear-level cameras are and are not doing.
