A Faster Chip Under the Familiar Armor

A new S11 chip or later is expected to handle the performance upgrade, paired with improvements to fitness tracking. Those changes point toward a refinement of the existing Ultra formula rather than a major redesign, keeping the focus on endurance, outdoor use and dependable access to information away from a network.

Touch ID Has Dropped Out of the Picture

Fingerprint authentication was once mentioned among the possibilities for this generation, but that feature now appears to have been ruled out. The more credible upgrades center on the processor, fitness features and satellite communication, all of which fit the watch's established purpose more naturally than a new biometric sensor.

An Unusual Start for Orders

The Ultra 4 is expected to appear at Apple's September 9 event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Apple Watch Series 12. Pre-orders may open at midnight Pacific on Saturday, September 12 instead of Apple's customary Friday morning window, a shift reportedly connected to the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
