College Football Stars Go to War

The Mosquito Bowl follows four celebrated college players who set aside promising careers to enlist in the Marines after Pearl Harbor. Nicholas Galitzine plays Brown quarterback John McLaughry, Bill Skarsgard and Tom Francis portray Wisconsin teammates Bob Baumann and David Schreiner, and Ray Nicholson takes the role of Purdue standout Tony Butkovich.

One Legendary Game Before Okinawa

The men are drawn from the certainty of stadium life into the violence of the Pacific, where a football game gathers elite players before the Battle of Okinawa. Peter Berg adapted the film from Buzz Bissinger's 2022 nonfiction book, reuniting the director of Friday Night Lights with the writer whose earlier work inspired it. The sports framework gives the characters a shared language, but the story is ultimately about brotherhood and the cost carried by young men whose futures changed overnight.

Peter Berg Puts the Cast Close to the Fire

The production used limited stunt doubles, placing its actors near practical explosions, burning trees, and other physical effects to make the combat feel immediate. Filming in Queensland and northern New South Wales let Australian locations stand in for Marine training grounds and the Pacific theater. After its select-theater run, the 127-minute drama moves to Netflix on November 25, bringing a true wartime story from the football field to a much harsher test of the same bonds.
