The New Governess Is the Danger at Ensor House

Victorian Psycho sends Winifred Notty to a remote English manor in 1858, ostensibly to care for a wealthy family's children. Maika Monroe plays the eccentric governess, whose arrival at Ensor House soon coincides with members of the staff disappearing. The household slowly realizes that the unsettling new employee may be more predator than protector.

A Costume Drama With Blood on Its Manners

Director Zachary Wigon stages the film with the polished rooms and clothing of a period drama, then lets Winifred tear through its rules of class and respectable behavior. The result mixes Gothic horror, dark comedy, and social satire rather than treating the setting as decoration. Thomasin McKenzie, Jason Isaacs, Ruth Wilson, Jacobi Jupe, and Evie Templeton surround Monroe in the increasingly unsafe house.

Virginia Feito Adapts Her Own Wicked Novel

Feito wrote the screenplay from her compact 2025 book, keeping the author's sharp perspective in the move to film. The story's literary ancestry is easy to recognize, but its governess has far more in common with a concealed killer than a virtuous Jane Eyre heroine. Victorian Psycho premiered in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section and heads to U.S. theaters November 13 through Bleecker Street. Its pleasure lies in watching a familiar manor-house story discover that it hired the wrong woman.
