The Bodyguard Is the Fake Girlfriend

Guarding Stars flips the usual celebrity-protector romance by putting Leighton Meester in charge of security. She plays Hannah, a no-nonsense bodyguard assigned to protect Jared Padalecki's charming action star, Jack Stapleton, from a stalker. To keep his family from learning about the threat, she poses as his girlfriend over the holidays.

Christmas Complicates the Cover Story

The assignment brings Hannah into Jack's family life, where professional distance is difficult to maintain and a convincing romance starts feeling less pretend. Sparks, secrets, and the pressure of an active threat give the Christmas setting more to do than provide decorations. The story is adapted from Katherine Center's 2022 novel The Bodyguard, with its original Thanksgiving setting moved into the holiday season.

A Familiar Pair Leads the Ensemble

Meester and Padalecki give the film a pairing built for warm banter, while Andie MacDowell joins a supporting cast that includes Walker Hayes, Noah LaLonde, Toby Sandeman, Rachael Ancheril, Phil Brooks, and Ava Max. Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum directs from a screenplay by Erin Cardillo, Richard Keith, Gina Matthews, and Grant Scharbo.

Guarding Stars arrives on Netflix November 18. It has the sturdy machinery of a fake-dating romance, but handing the dangerous job to Hannah gives that familiar setup a useful reversal.
