An X5 That Refuels With Hydrogen

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen brings fuel-cell power into regular production for the first time at BMW. Planned for 2028, the SUV pairs the company's third-generation hydrogen system with xDrive all-wheel drive and targets up to 466 miles on the WLTP cycle. Refueling is expected to take under five minutes, giving it a very different rhythm from a battery-electric road trip.

Seven Kilograms Beneath the Floor

BMW's new flat-storage layout places several parallel 700-bar tanks under the vehicle, holding roughly seven kilograms of hydrogen without taking over the passenger cabin. The system occupies about the same installation space as a sixth-generation BMW battery pack. Power comes from a fuel-cell system developed with Toyota, continuing a technical partnership that has been running for years.

Five Powertrains, One X5 Family

Hydrogen will sit alongside battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, gasoline, and diesel versions of the next X5 rather than replacing them. That makes the iX5 a targeted alternative for drivers who can reach hydrogen stations and value fast stops over charging time. The infrastructure remains the hard part, but the vehicle itself is moving beyond a pilot fleet and into BMW's normal production plans.
