Metropolis Reopens a Famous Murder

The People v. Gorilla Grodd follows Daily Planet reporter Jimmy Olsen as he investigates whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted of killing his father, the King of Gorilla City. The half-hour comedy presents that inquiry as an eight-part true-crime documentary made inside the DC Universe. Its mockumentary approach turns a supervillain case into a story about evidence, media, and Metropolis' criminal justice system.

Jimmy Olsen Gets Behind the Camera

Skyler Gisondo returns as Jimmy, with Jimmy Tatro playing the superintelligent ape at the center of the case. Superman's Daily Planet ensemble also carries over, including Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz are among the additional cast.

The American Vandal Team Takes the Case

Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the creators of American Vandal, will write, run, and executive-produce the series. Yacenda is set to direct all eight episodes, while James Gunn and Peter Safran serve as executive producers. The creative team wants the finished show to feel like a Daily Planet documentary that viewers in Metropolis could actually watch.

A Straight-to-Series DCU Experiment

HBO gave The People v. Gorilla Grodd a straight-to-series order, so it will skip the pilot stage. A premiere date has not been announced. The compact episode count and documentary framing give this Superman spinoff a distinct identity within the DCU, using one of comics' strangest villains to explore a very recognizable appetite for sensational murder cases.
