Ciri Takes the Medallion

The Witcher 4 passes the lead role from Geralt of Rivia to his surrogate daughter, Ciri. She was playable for selected sequences in The Witcher 3, but this sequel puts her at the center of a full open-world RPG and a new saga. Ciara Berkeley now voices the character, following Jo Wyatt's performance in the previous game.

The Path Now Points Toward 2028

CD Projekt Red is targeting a 2028 launch window, though it is not ready to name an exact date. The game first appeared through a cinematic trailer at The Game Awards in 2024, which showed Ciri working as a professional monster slayer. The longer timeline reflects how early that reveal landed in the development process.

Gamescom Belongs to Geralt This Time

The Witcher 4 will sit out the current Gamescom presentation. Instead, CD Projekt Red is focusing the event on Songs of the Past, a new Witcher 3 expansion due in 2027, with show-floor access and livestreams planned throughout the week. That content gives the older game another chapter while the studio continues building Ciri's larger adventure.

A New Hero Changes the Moral Weight

Ciri inherits a series known for monsters, political cruelty, and choices without clean outcomes, but her history and powers differ sharply from Geralt's. Moving her from occasional playable character to professional witcher opens room for a new perspective on that familiar world. The wait is substantial, yet the shift in protagonist gives CD Projekt Red more to rethink than a simple continuation of Geralt's travels.
