David Tennant is stepping back into the Tenth Doctor’s suit for a new 12-episode audio series, but his companion this time comes from another corner of the Whoniverse. Anjli Mohindra returns as journalist Rani Chandra, reuniting two characters whose lives were both profoundly shaped by Sarah Jane Smith.

Rani Is No Longer the Young Apprentice

Rani first appeared in The Sarah Jane Adventures as a curious teenager learning journalism while helping Sarah Jane defend Earth from alien threats. By the time of this story, she has grown into one of the world’s leading journalists, giving the Doctor a capable investigative partner rather than the younger Rani he briefly met in The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith.

Their shared history with Sarah Jane gives this pairing an emotional foundation before the first mystery even begins. It also lets Big Finish continue Rani’s life beyond the television spinoff while returning Tennant to an earlier point in his Doctor’s travels.

Cryptids, Television, and a Royal Crisis

The series contains three adventures spread across its 12 episodes. The Doctor and Rani will investigate cryptids in present-day Cumbria, stumble onto the production of a 1970s science-fiction show, and face a major crisis during the coronation of Elizabeth I.

Doctor Who – The Tenth Doctor and Rani arrives from Big Finish in August 2027. It is an audio return rather than a new television season, but the scale promises a full Tenth Doctor journey rather than a brief cameo.
