The Small Volvo Gets a Sharper Face

The 2028 XC40 keeps Volvo's compact gas-powered SUV in the lineup while giving it a cleaner, more modern look. A reshaped grille, hood, front wings, and bumper pull the nose closer to the company's newer designs, while revised Thor's Hammer headlights preserve the familiar Volvo signature. The tailgate, rear bumper, and taillights have also been updated, so this is more than a quick grille swap.

A Bigger Window Into Google Gemini

Inside, the old 9-inch display gives way to a higher-resolution 11.2-inch touchscreen running Android Automotive. Google Gemini is built into the system, bringing a more conversational assistant to navigation, media, and other cabin controls. It is a meaningful upgrade in a small SUV whose dashboard had begun to look dated beside Volvo's newer models.

Safety Tech That Watches Beyond the Bumper

Updated cameras, radar, and sensors support automatic emergency steering and collision avoidance. A door-opening alert can also warn occupants when a cyclist or vehicle is approaching from behind, a useful feature for crowded city streets. The current XC40 carries through late 2026 before the refreshed model reaches dealers in early 2027, skipping the 2027 model year along the way.
