The Eclipse Returns on Nissan Leaf Bones

Mitsubishi's Eclipse Sportback EV is a compact electric crossover based on the latest Nissan Leaf. The company changes the front and rear bodywork, lighting signatures, C-pillar trim, and wheels, giving the shared platform a sharper Mitsubishi face. It also brings a fully electric model back to the brand's U.S. showrooms after a long absence.

Two Charge Doors Solve Two Different Jobs

Every version carries a liquid-cooled 75kWh battery and places a charging port on each front fender. The passenger side uses NACS for DC fast charging at up to 150kW and access to compatible Tesla Superchargers. A J1772 connector on the driver's side handles Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging, which can make awkward home and public charger layouts easier to reach.

Familiar Hardware Comes With a Longer Warranty

The related Leaf pairs this battery with a 214-horsepower front motor and reaches as much as 303 EPA miles, though Mitsubishi has not published final range or pricing for its version. Charging from 10 to 80 percent is expected to take about 35 minutes. Mitsubishi's five-year basic and 10-year powertrain warranties could become an important distinction between the two alliance siblings.

The Eclipse Sportback goes on sale this fall in the United States and Canada. The old coupe name may stir debate, but the practical result is a modern, Supercharger-ready EV that expands Mitsubishi's very small North American lineup quickly.
