Genesis Plugs Its First Hybrid Gap

The GV80 Hybrid becomes the first gas-electric model from Genesis, more than a decade after the luxury brand separated from Hyundai. Its new system pairs a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with two electric motors for 347 horsepower. That places it between the existing 300-hp four-cylinder GV80 and the 375-hp twin-turbo V6.

Two Motors Split the Work

A starter-generator motor fires the engine and produces electricity, while a separate drive motor handles propulsion and regenerative braking. The drive motor also replaces a conventional reverse gear, reducing mechanical complexity. A liquid-cooled battery helps manage temperature, and the SUV can move under electric power from startup to roughly 19 mph.

More Pull With Less Fuel

Genesis claims a 25 percent fuel-economy improvement for a rear-wheel-drive model on 19-inch wheels compared with the equivalent gas GV80. Output rises by 47 horsepower, while torque climbs from 311 to 391 pound-feet. The hybrid reaches 62 mph in 7.1 seconds, giving the efficiency upgrade a useful performance gain as well.

Quiet Comfort Gets Smarter

Stay Mode can run vehicle systems from the battery while the SUV is parked, keeping the engine off during longer waits. Regenerative braking adjusts with navigation data, traffic-camera information, and the distance to the car ahead. A smoother seven-speed automatic, quieter engine hardware, fresh wheel and grille designs, and new interior choices round out a model confirmed for the United States, with fuller timing details still to come.
